Physicians to Be More Responsible to Treat Obesity Epidemic

Approximately two-thirds of Americans are overweight and about 36 percent are obese. As alarming as these statistics sound, research is indicating that the problem is only going to get worse. According to recent reports, more than half of the country’s population in the majority of states will be obese by the year 2030. These trends are a grave concern on a national level to health officials in the government as well as on the very local level with primary care physicians.

Obesity a Health Risk

Obesity poses a threat to health on many levels. It increases the risk of countless health problems. However, of most concern are Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Research also indicates that obesity is also linked to increased risks of cancer. Because of the increased risks for these serious health problems, obesity is a problem that needs to be addressed in this country and soon. If the trends and research are correct, then nearly half of the country will be at a heightened risk for a number of serious health problems. Not only will this put a huge burden on the healthcare industry, but it will also put many people’s lives at risk.

Health Care Cost

Healthcare is a major concern in this country as it is and the estimates are that by the year 2030, healthcare costs will increase by $48 billion for a total of $66 billion per year according to leading reports. In order to have a serious debate about healthcare and costs in this country, the issue of obesity needs to be taken seriously and addressed. Before the debates over who pays for healthcare take place, the entire country needs to get a handle on the growing obesity problem.

Public Education

Nobody sets out to become obese, so why are so many Americans becoming obese. In a time when education about eating healthy and the importance of exercise is so well known, it would seem that Americans would be more fit than ever. Unfortunately, there is a gap between knowledge and application. People in the US are focused on leading a busy lifestyle and therefore make poor lifestyle decisions. They eat fast food and purchase junk foods for their family when they eat at home. Most people do not set out to provide an unhealthy meal for their family. In most cases, it is simply a matter of getting a quick meal pulled together in a short period of time between work and helping the kids with homework and extra-curricular activity. Unfortunately, it has become far to easy to make unhealthy food choices in the US.

To make matters worse, research is now suggesting a link between the BPA chemical that is used in packaging for foods and childhood obesity. While researchers can prove a causal link, it does strongly suggest that BPA is related to childhood obesity. What is the solution to preventing obesity? Outreach from primary care physicians and family practices are a good place to start. For those who already have a problem, your doctor may be the best place to turn for help. Most family practices, and pediatricians will be able to make arrangements and treatment plans in your area. Your urgent care centers should refer you back to your Falls Church primary care doctor or pediatrician to cure this problem. Aside from these professionals providing care and resources, people need to begin to eat increasingly more whole foods and rely less and less on packaged, fast foods.
